What is IGF-1 DES?
IGF-1 DES — formally DES(1-3) IGF-1 — is a truncated analog of insulin-like growth factor 1 that is missing the first three amino acids at its N-terminus. That small deletion has two consequences:
- Sharply reduced binding to IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) — so more of it is free and active
- Very high potency — in several assays it is markedly more potent than native IGF-1
Unlike IGF-1 LR3, DES is short-acting. It is studied where a potent but brief, localised IGF signal is wanted, rather than the sustained action LR3 provides.
